Why titles and descriptions matter
The title and meta description are usually the first thing a searcher sees. A clear title helps a page match the query, and a helpful description can raise the number of people who click. Search engines may rewrite either one, but a good source text gives them a good starting point.
Title guidelines
- Keep it to roughly 50 to 60 characters so it is not cut off in results. Display is based on pixel width, so treat this as approximate.
- Put the main topic near the start.
- Make every page title unique.
- Write for people first. Avoid stuffing keywords or repeating them.
- Add your brand at the end if there is room.
Meta description guidelines
- Aim for around 120 to 160 characters.
- Summarise what the visitor will get and why it is useful.
- Use natural language and, where it fits, a clear action such as learn, compare or calculate.
- Do not copy the same description across many pages.
Preview it with Serpgy
- Open the SERP Snippet Preview.
- Type your page title, description and URL.
- Check how they look on desktop and where they might be truncated.
- Edit until the snippet reads clearly, then add it to your page's head.
Example
Weak: Home. Better: Free Online Tools for Developers and Creators | Serpgy. Weak description: tools. Better: Fast, free browser-based calculators, converters and developer utilities. No account needed.
Remember
A good snippet does not guarantee a ranking. It helps a page that already deserves to rank get chosen. Also make sure the page content matches what the snippet promises.
