When you need to convert an image

Websites, email, social platforms and print shops each prefer different image formats. Converting between JPG, PNG and WebP lets you keep pages fast, keep transparency where you need it, or satisfy an upload form that only accepts one type.

Which format for which job

  • JPG: best for photographs and complex images. It is small, but lossy and has no transparency.
  • PNG: lossless, supports transparency and stays sharp for logos, screenshots, text and UI graphics. Files are larger for photos.
  • WebP: supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency, and is often noticeably smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality. It is supported by all current major browsers.

How to convert with Serpgy

  1. Open the Image Format Converter and choose your image.
  2. Pick the target format: PNG, JPG or WebP.
  3. If the format is lossy, set a quality level. Values around 75 to 85 are a good balance for photos.
  4. Convert, check the preview, then download the result.

Things to know before you convert

  • Converting a lossy file such as JPG to PNG does not restore lost detail. It only stores the current pixels without further loss.
  • Converting a transparent PNG to JPG replaces the transparent areas with a solid background colour, because JPG cannot store transparency.
  • Converting lossy to lossy repeatedly (JPG to WebP to JPG) degrades quality each time. Always convert from your original when you can.
  • Keep the original file. Conversion produces a new copy.

Privacy

The conversion runs in your browser, so the image is not uploaded to a server.
